As many people will now be aware there are currently proposals to develop The Dell, in Hitchin, between the Queen Mother Theatre and Windmill Hill.

The current plan is to build a 'high ropes course'. This is basically a series of challenges and obstacles at height, which is to be built in the foot of The Dell. The current plan as we understand it, will take over at least two thirds, if not more of the The Dell, making it unuseable for any other activity. Current drawings show the development to take over the entirety of the base of The Dell. What they don't show, is that if this plan goes ahead, the whole area could be fenced off.

The developers report widespread public support, but unsurprisingly, in their discussions they are only focusing on the positive aspects of their project. There is another side to this.

We believe this is a positive project and we would like to support it. However, we are thoroughly opposed to one of the most beautiful natural areas of Hitchin, being fenced such that Hitchin residents cannot use it freely.

We ask that you don't offer your public support to this project until you have heard Our Objections.

We would like to state that we do not wish to fight what we believe could be a positively minded project, and we would love to support it's organisers. However we cannot support this project in it's current form, and we hope that you will support us in ensuring that The Dell remains one of the most beautiful areas of Hitchin that is free and open to all.
